Perl is one of the scripting languages on my dislike list. I learned it early and felt that it was cumbersome to use. It was one of the scripting languages often used for system programming in UNIX. Personally, I prefer other scripting languages such as PHP for web work and Bash for system level scripting. Now to be clear, the last time I had to work with Perl was around the time of Perl 4 before any object oriented changes were made to the language so I really do not know the state of the art for Perl. Some people like it and I have used it so it does rank a page with references.
