John Scalzi is the author of The Old Man’s War series. He as also written several stand-alone novels including Agent to the Stars and Redshirts: A Novel With Three Codas. I had the pleasure of sitting in on John’s panel at the World Science Fiction Convention in Reno, Nevada where he gave a talk on his visit to the Creation Museum. His slide show featured many falsehoods that the museum presents as facts; he had the audience rolling on the floor with laughter.

I first met Charles Stross at Boskone in Boston where he read his short story Bit Rot, a story about cannibal zombie robots in space. I was hooked. Charles is the author of The Laundry Files, a series about a secret British Government Organization that is tasked with fighting supernatural horrors. It is Lovecraft meets Pratchett. Charles is also writes hard science fiction. He is was a technical author and programmer; he uses his past career to sprinkle modern technology into his writing, much to my delight.

The first fantasy epic that I read was The Lord of the Ring trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien. His world, called Middle Earth, is rich in history and stories. I still measure elves and dwarves that I meet in my readings to the Tolkien standard.

Christopher Stasheff is a science fiction and fantasy writer. His The Warlock Series is an enjoyable piece of science fiction. That is right, it is science fiction not fantasy even though it is about witches and warlocks. Two of his other series that I have enjoyed are A Wizard in Rhyme (a fantasy series) and Starthip Troupers (a science fiction series about a theatrical company).
